UPC-E Standard Sizes

The official GS1 specification defines the ten standard sizes SC0–SC9 for UPC-E. The dimensions of the most commonly used size SC2 are already set as default in the generator. If needed, choose another standard size from the table below, or enter custom width and height.

OCR-B – The Standard Font for UPC-E Barcodes

For the human-readable UPC-E number below the barcode, our generator uses the font OCR-B by default. This is recommended by GS1 for all barcodes in the UPC/EAN family, including UPC-E. Additional fonts are available for selection. The Text Offset from Symbol setting allows adjusting the spacing between the human-readable number and the barcode symbol. Negative values can also be used to compensate for excessive white space.

UPC-E Barcodes as Vector or Raster Images

UPC-E is the compressed form of the UPC-A barcode, created for small packaging where a full UPC-A symbol would not fit – typical examples include blister packs, travel-size cosmetics, or other compact consumer products. The best file format depends on how the barcode graphic will be used downstream. The vector formats PDF and EPS are the formats of choice for professional print: both handle CMYK colors, support transparent backgrounds, and store coordinates at six decimal places of precision. The human-readable UPC-E number is converted to outlines, so no fonts need to be supplied. EPS additionally embeds a TIFF preview for DTP software lacking native EPS rendering. SVG is limited to RGB colors and is best suited for web-based use.

When raster output is required, PNG, BMP, and JPG embed the DPI value in the file header – layout applications can therefore read resolution and physical dimensions correctly. Bar widths are calculated to match the output resolution precisely, keeping the barcode reliably scannable even at 203 or 300 DPI. Of the three raster formats, only PNG supports transparent backgrounds.
